Fashion and Garment Design is the art of applying design, aesthetics and natural beauty to clothing and its accessories. It is influenced by cultural and social attitudes, and has varied over time and place. Fashion and Garment Designers work in a number of ways in designing clothing and accessories such as bracelets and neck laces. Because of the time required to bring a garment together onto the market, garment designers must at times anticipate changes to consumer tastes.

Trainees in this section will learn topics ranging from how to use a variety of machines and means of technologies, taking of measurements, pattern making, product design and development, fashion illustration, design adaption, the use of diverse textiles across various styles and garments as well as a variety of business, economics and entrepreneurial components. 

01. Major aspects of  fashion and Design

  • Fitting garment samples on a fit model.
  • Drafting the shapes and sizes of a garment’s pieces..
  • Making custom designed garments made to the client’s measure
  • Designing fabric weaves and prints for clothes and furnishings.
  • Coordinating the clothes, jewelry, and  accessories used in fashion photography and catwalk presentations.
  • Selecting and buying the mix of clothing available in retail shops, department stores, and chain stores.
  • Making custom- made garments to order, for a given customer.
  • Adjusting the fit of completed garments, usually ready-made, and sometimes re-styling them.
  • Recommending styles and colors that are flattering to the client.
  • Writing fashion articles describing the garments presented or fashion trends, for magazines or newspapers
  • specializing in custom-made women’s clothes: day, cocktail, and evening dresses, business clothes and suits, trousseau, sports clothes, and lingerie.
  • Predicting what colors, styles and shapes will be popular (“on Trend”) before the garments are on sale.
  • Drawing and Painting clothing designs for commercial use.
  • Sewing ready-to-wear or mass-producing clothing by hand or with a sewing machine, either in a garment shop or as a sewing machine operator in a factory.
